Abstract
Background/Aims: All of the gastroduodenal polypoid lesions detected by endoscopy are not true polyps, and others involve precancerous lesion. Small polypoid lesion is occasionally removed by biopsy forcep during diagnostic endoscopy without polypectomy. We examined the characteristics of small gastroduodenal polypoid lesions removed by biopsy forcep.

Methods: We analyzed 569 patients with 629 gastroduodenal polypoid lesions detected during diagnostic endoscopy. All lesions were grossly removed by endoscopic biopsy forceps. Endoscopic records and histopathologic reports of patients were analyzed retrospectively.

Results: The most common location of these lesions was body of stomach and bulb of duodenum. All of these lesions were sessile form. Most of these lesions (97.6%) were below 5 mm in size. Of them, 351 of inflammation (55.8%), 206 of hyperplasia (32.8%), 53 of fundic gland polyp (8.4%), 12 of intestinal metaplasia (1.9%), 6 of low grade dysplasia (1.0%) and 1 of gastritis cystica (0.2%) were noted. Adenoma and carcinoma were not noted. Post-forcep biopsy complications were rare. Precancerous findings include hyperplastic polyp and dysplasia were not related to location, size and shape of lesions.

Conclusions: Most of the small gastroduodenal polypoid lesions removed by forcep biopsy during diagnostic endoscopy were hyperplasia and inflammation.
